Why Auto Insurance Costs Less in Katy Than in Houston (And How to Get the Katy Rate)

June 30, 2026 · 5 min read

One of the most common conversations we have with new clients goes like this: they moved from central Houston to Katy or Cypress a couple of years ago, but their auto premium never dropped. Sometimes it went up. Why?

ZIP-level rating

Auto insurance in Texas is rated at the ZIP code level. Carriers look at claim frequency, uninsured motorist rates, theft, and traffic density in each ZIP — and adjust premiums accordingly. Central Houston consistently rates 15–25% higher than most Katy, Cypress, and Fulshear ZIPs for the same driver profile.

The catch: your carrier may not requote

When you move, your existing carrier often doesn't proactively requote at the new ZIP. They may adjust your rate a little, but not by the full amount you'd get on a brand-new quote — because that would surface how much you were overpaying at the old address.

How to get the Katy rate

The fix is simple: get a fresh quote as if you're a brand-new customer. When we shop for Houston-to-Katy movers we compare 6–10 carriers at the new ZIP and almost always find $300–$800 of annual savings on the same coverage.

Other Katy-specific discounts

Newer suburban neighborhoods often qualify for garaged-vehicle credits, low-mileage discounts (many Katy commuters now hybrid-work), and multi-policy discounts if you also insure your home. Bundled with home in Katy, we regularly see combined savings north of $1,000/year.
